Mother’s Day and Father’s Day

Maybe, because I care for my patients right in their own homes, it is abundantly clear to me that pet owners view their dogs and cats as true members of their families. In fact, most of my clients identify themselves as their pets’ mothers or fathers; and my messages often reflect that “Oliver’s mom” has called.

Why a House Call Practice?

My house call practice was actually launched serendipitously.  I left a veterinary clinic where I’d worked for years, and my clients were calling me at home, requesting appointments. I thought I might fill the gap between leaving one practice and moving to another by seeing pets in their own homes. We all assumed that this was a temporary situation, but very soon it was clear, even in those early days, that the animals I cared for were much more comfortable in their own environments.  I realized that all the time I’d been seeing pets in clinical settings, I’d hardly ever seen my patients without high blood pressure, glazed eyes, panting tongues and shaking limbs.  I knew then that I had to find a way to see animals and serve them where they were most themselves – in their own homes; not compromised by the anxiety of an office visit.

And so, I launched City Pets, one of the very first House Call Veterinary Practices, over twenty years ago. It’s proven to have been the right path for me and for the pets I serve.

Between my practice and my involvement in EcoHealth Alliance, The School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and The Wildlife Conservation Society, my work with animals is all consuming. I look forward to touching base with many of you – from your own lives with pets, to our shared interest in the natural world. I hope you visit the site often and follow us on Twitter, Facebook or Pinterest!

“I am so honored to serve as an ambassador for the Wildlife Conservation Society, lending my support to their crucial work across the world on behalf of animals. Look into seeing all they do and how you might join us in supporting them! Watch the video on the right to hear from my friend and client Billy Joel about protecting elephants.”
